The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) is set to roll out an electric campus transportation scheme across 12 pilot tertiary institutions starting in November 2025.

TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono announced the initiative, which is designed to ease mobility risks and high costs faced by students, particularly those who live off-campus.

Key Details of the Transport Scheme

  • Pilot Launch: The electric student shuttle service will begin in selected institutions next month (November 2025}.
  • Sustainability: The vehicles will have dedicated charging stations set up on each campus.
  • Management: The scheme will be managed by students themselves to promote both accountability and sustainability.
  • Affordability: Rides will be offered at a minimal cost to ensure the service is affordable for all students.

The initiative is part of a broader directive from President Bola Tinubu’s administration to improve student welfare and enhance learning environments through innovation.

Broader Infrastructure Support

The transport scheme is just one component of TETFund’s extensive investment plan. Echono revealed other ongoing interventions aimed at modernising higher education:

  • Hostel Projects: TETFund is intensifying investments in student hostels across 72 institutions, with commissioning of completed projects scheduled to begin in December.
  • Digital and Research Support: The agency is scaling up funding for research laboratories, digital learning systems, and sustainable power projects to boost the quality and global competitiveness of higher education.
  • Funding Context: The agency received a record N1.6 trillion allocation for interventions in August 2025, with N70 billion specifically earmarked for energy projects, including solar and gas-powered systems.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) commended TETFund’s efforts, recognising the agency’s transformative impact on facilities across Nigerian campuses.
