The Federal Government has introduced a new digital portal designed to streamline the **registration, certification, and professional development of Nigerian teachers**. The new platform is a key part of the government’s ongoing effort to strengthen the nation’s education sector.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, announced the platform’s launch in Abuja, describing it as a move to reposition education in the country. Developed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the portal will provide a comprehensive system for teachers to easily register, obtain and renew their licenses, and track their professional growth. It will also serve as a national database for teacher performance and career progression.
Key Reforms for Teachers
The new initiative includes several reforms aimed at improving the teaching profession:
Digitalisation: Teachers can now register, check their results, and print certificates online from home, eliminating the need to visit physical offices.
Professionalization: The TRCN has simplified its Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) from 23 subjects to five core areas: foundational mathematics, literacy, digital literacy, safeguarding, and pedagogy.
Accountability: A mandatory **Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework** will be implemented to ensure the safety and moral integrity of classrooms. Private schools will also be required to verify their teachers’ TRCN registration and ethical clearance through the portal.
Innovation: An AI-powered lesson plan generator is scheduled to be introduced in October to provide customized instructional materials for teachers.
According to Dr. Ronke Soyombo, the TRCN Registrar, these changes are part of her 100-day action plan to digitize the council’s operations and improve efficiency. The goal is to increase the number of TRCN-certified teachers by 50 per cent, enhance child protection, and meet global standards.
The CEO of TeckPlus Digital Solutions, the company that built the portal, stated that the project addresses longstanding issues with teacher data management. Previously, it was difficult to get accurate numbers on the number of certified or qualified teachers in Nigeria, which impacted learning outcomes. The new system will provide reliable national data and reduce delays in certification.
Representatives from the British Council and the British High Commission also praised the platform, calling it a significant milestone for Nigeria’s education system that will improve data management and motivate teachers. A representative for the President also urged that the portal be inclusive by incorporating accessibility tools such as screen readers and sign language support.
