The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has congratulated leading Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele on the record-breaking box office performance of her latest film, Behind The Scene (BTS), which has grossed over ₦2.4 billion at the Nigerian box office.
In a statement issued by Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Executive Director/CEO of the Board, the NFVCB described the achievement as a landmark moment for Nigerian cinema, noting that the film’s continued strong cinema run further cements Akindele’s status as one of Nollywood’s most commercially successful figures.
The Board highlighted Akindele’s remarkable consistency, observing that she has now delivered four consecutive years of record-shattering box office performances.
“This level of consistency reflects not only creative excellence but also a strong understanding of audience engagement and the evolving dynamics of film production, distribution and exhibition in Nigeria,” the statement said.
As Nigeria’s statutory regulator for film content, distribution and exhibition, the NFVCB reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating achievements that enhance the growth, visibility and commercial sustainability of the country’s audiovisual industry.
In recognition of Akindele’s sustained success, the Board announced plans to formally present her with a Box Office Queen Award for 2023, 2024 and 2025. Dr. Husseini disclosed that the awards would be presented at a later date, with the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, expected to participate in the ceremony alongside other senior industry figures.
In a related development, the NFVCB also commended actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham on the box office success of her directorial debut, Oversabi Auntie, which has grossed over ₦1 billion nationwide.
The Board described the feat as historic, noting that the film ranks among the four highest-grossing Nollywood films of all time and marks an impressive entry into directing for Abraham.
According to the NFVCB, the success of Oversabi Auntie underscores Abraham’s versatility and growing influence within the industry, while highlighting the expanding opportunities for filmmakers reshaping storytelling and audience engagement in contemporary Nollywood.
“We congratulate both filmmakers on their remarkable milestones. Their achievements are strong indicators of Nollywood’s continued growth, resilience and global promise,” Dr. Husseini said.
