The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has partnered with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to enforce the nationwide ban on sachet alcohol and alcoholic beverages in bottles below 200 millilitres.

The development was announced in a statement signed by Mojisola Adeyeye. NAFDAC’s Director-General, Enforcement of the ban took effect in January, following a directive by the Nigerian Senate aimed at protecting public health and reducing underage drinking.

At a joint press briefing, Adeyeye said the renewed enforcement drive is intended to shield children from alcohol abuse, noting that small and affordable packaging has made alcohol easily accessible to minors. She warned that early exposure increases risks of addiction, poor academic performance, and long-term health complications.

Lanre Issa-Onilu, NOA Director-General, described the campaign as a preventive measure targeting vulnerable groups. He said the agency would mobilise its nationwide presence across all 774 local government areas to raise awareness through schools, markets, religious centres and media platforms. The NOA CLHEEAN App will also be deployed to enable citizens report violations.

Manufacturers were granted a five-year moratorium in 2018 to transition away from sachet alcohol production. However, following a Senate resolution in November 2025, enforcement moved into full effect in January 2026.

Data from a 2021 nationwide alcohol consumption survey showed that 54.3 per cent of minors could obtain alcohol independently, with many purchasing sachet and small-bottle products, reinforcing regulatory concerns over youth access to cheap, high-strength alcohol.
