The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has called for an immediate end to the harassment of manufacturers by individuals allegedly acting as Local Government revenue agents.
Dr. (Lady) Ada Chukwudozie, Chairman of MAN’s Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi Branch, made the appeal during a stakeholders’ engagement with Local Government Authorities on taxation and ease of doing business in Anambra State.
She urged the authorities to tackle the growing problem of multiple taxation and pledged MAN’s readiness to partner with the councils to improve tax compliance and promote greater transparency.
Chukwudozie stressed that manufacturers are not opposed to paying legitimate taxes. However, they are troubled by repeated demands, conflicting levies, and threats from people claiming to represent council authorities. This situation, she said, has created confusion over which taxes are legally due and opened the door for unauthorised individuals to exploit businesses.
To address these challenges, the MAN chairman proposed the publication of an official schedule of all Local Government taxes and levies, the harmonisation of overlapping taxes, and the establishment of a dedicated liaison platform between MAN, the state government, and local councils to resolve disputes promptly.
She expressed confidence that a transparent and predictable tax system would boost compliance, attract investment, and significantly improve the ease of doing business in the state.
