Lagos State’s landmass has grown from 3,577 to 4,050 square kilometers, a result of extensive reclamation of wetlands and lagoon areas for real estate development. Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, disclosed this while speaking at Harvard University’s Climate Action Week.
The commissioner highlighted the environmental consequences of this expansion, including increased risks of flooding and ecological damage. To combat this, he announced that all future land reclamation projects must now include an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a proper drainage master plan.
The state is also investing in resilient drainage systems, enforcing environmental laws, and prosecuting those who engage in illegal construction or waste dumping to protect against climate-related risks.
