Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains uncertain as the country awaits a response from FIFA over its request to relocate group-stage matches from the United States to Mexico.
The request, submitted by the Iranian government, seeks a venue change amid rising geopolitical tensions and security concerns linked to the tournament.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ahmad Donyamali, Iran’s Minister of Sport, confirmed that Tehran is yet to receive official feedback from FIFA.
“Our request to relocate Iran’s matches to Mexico is still valid, but we have not received any response. If accepted, Iran’s participation will be certain,” he said.
Iran’s football authorities have been pushing for the relocation of their three group-stage matches, citing concerns over U.S. involvement in regional conflicts and broader diplomatic tensions.
The country’s football federation has also restricted national and club teams from travelling to nations it considers hostile, further complicating participation plans.
However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently indicated that Iran’s matches would proceed as scheduled, adding to the uncertainty.
Despite the situation, Donyamali noted that preparations for the tournament are ongoing, with the final decision resting with the Iranian government.
Security assurances have emerged as the central issue in Iran’s deliberations. Donyamali stressed that host nations are obligated under FIFA regulations to guarantee the safety of all participating teams.
He also criticised remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the safety of Iran’s participation, describing them as inconsistent.
According to the minister, without credible guarantees, Iran is unlikely to play matches hosted in the United States.
“Under these circumstances, the possibility of Iran participating in matches in the U.S. is very low. But if adequate security guarantees are provided, the government will make a final decision,” he said.
With the tournament fast approaching, the situation places Iran’s World Cup campaign in limbo, pending FIFA’s response on venue adjustments and safety assurances.
