Ibom Air has fully implemented the latest safety directive issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) concerning the carriage and use of power banks on commercial flights.
The directive, aligned with global aviation safety standards, introduces a new restriction prohibiting passengers from placing power banks in overhead bins during flights. Instead, travellers must keep power banks in the cabin, either in the seat pocket in front of them, under the seat, or inside a carry-on bag that remains within easy reach throughout the journey.
The airline emphasised that the long-standing ban on placing power banks in checked baggage remains in force. This policy is consistent with existing safety rules governing lithium battery-powered devices such as laptops and other portable electronics.
According to the NCAA’s safety guidance, keeping power banks within accessible reach ensures that cabin crew can respond swiftly in the event of overheating or fire, reducing potential safety risks during flight.
Under the updated regulations, power banks with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) are permitted without restriction. However, devices with capacities between 100Wh and 160Wh require prior airline approval before travel.
Ibom Air said the adoption of the directive reinforces its commitment to passenger and crew safety while maintaining compliance with national and international aviation standards.
