Google is preparing a fresh return to the smart glasses market in 2026, more than a decade after its first attempt, Google Glass (2013–2015), failed to take off.
The tech giant’s new play comes at a time when the global AI wearables market is booming, with sales of AI-powered glasses rising by over 250 per cent in H1 2025, according to Counterpoint Research. Meta alone has sold two million units of its Ray-Ban–powered smart glasses as of February, setting the pace.
Two Models, One Goal: AI Everywhere
Google’s 2026 lineup will include two versions:
AI-assisted glasses without a display, and
A display-equipped model that allows users to interact with Google’s own AI ecosystem, including its chatbot Gemini.
While Google confirmed that the first set of AI glasses will debut in 2026, it has not disclosed technical details or pricing.
Avoiding the Mistakes of Google Glass
Google Glass, launched in 2013 and discontinued in 2015, was criticised for:
- Privacy concerns over its built-in camera
- Its unconventional design
- Limited real-world usefulness
- A later iteration, Google Glass Enterprise Edition, was introduced in 2017 but finally retired in 2023.
Technology analyst Paolo Pescatore says Google must “avoid the pitfalls” of its earlier attempt, which he described as “ahead of its time, poorly conceived and executed.” He notes that the rise of Gemini gives Google a more solid AI foundation this time.
A Tougher Market Than 2013
Google’s return comes as competition intensifies. Meta’s AI glasses, created with eyewear giants Ray-Ban and Oakley, have reshaped consumer expectations for style, battery life, and hands-free AI features.
Tech giants now pack more processing power into slimmer, more fashionable frames, but concerns persist around:
- Privacy
- Always-on cameras and microphones
- Usability in public spaces
Why This Matters
The global race to dominate the AI wearables category is accelerating. With AI assistants quickly becoming everyday tools, smart glasses could become the next major hardware battleground, and Google is betting that 2026 is its comeback moment.
