Google is rolling out new features for Gemini that give users more control over their data. These updates include the introduction of Temporary Chats, new data controls for uploads, and a separate setting for audio and video recordings.
The new Temporary Chat feature allows you to have a conversation with Gemini that won’t be saved or used for personalization or model training. These chats will not appear in your recent chat history or Gemini Apps Activity. They are saved for a period of 72 hours for safety purposes and to allow Gemini to respond to your requests.
Google is also updating how it handles user-uploaded data. The Gemini Apps Activity setting will be renamed to Keep Activity. If you have this setting enabled, a subset of uploads, such as files, photos, and videos, will be used to help improve Google’s services. This change will take effect starting September 2. You can turn off this setting at any time or manage and delete your activity. If the Gemini Apps Activity setting is currently off, the new Keep Activity setting will remain off by default.
A new, separate setting for Gemini audio and Gemini Live recordings is also being introduced. This setting is off by default, and you can choose to turn it on if you want to contribute your audio, video, and screenshare data to improve Google services.
Google emphasizes that your privacy is a priority. When human reviewers are used to improve services, chats are disconnected from your account to protect your privacy. You can find more details about these changes in the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.
