The Federal Government, through Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), has announced the successful connection of nine underserved Local Government Areas (LGAs) to broadband internet as part of efforts to expand digital access across Nigeria.

The initiative, executed under Project 774, is designed to strengthen national digital infrastructure and promote inclusive connectivity in rural and previously unserved communities.

According to findings, the newly connected LGAs will enable thousands of rural dwellers to access internet services, opening opportunities in digital education, e-commerce, online marketing, and other empowerment initiatives.

A statement signed by Chidi Okpala, GBB’s Head of Corporate Communications, said the rollout reflects the agency’s commitment to extending reliable connectivity to communities that previously lacked stable internet access.

“This initiative extends digital access to communities that previously lacked reliable internet. It reflects our ongoing mission to build Nigeria’s digital backbone and support socio-economic development,” Okpala said.

Since his appointment two years ago by President Bola Tinubu, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju,, Managing Director/CEO, has overseen significant digital expansion initiatives within the agency.

Okpala noted that Galaxy Backbone’s recent achievements cut across universities, airports, and government institutions nationwide.

Among key milestones are the completion of Fibre-to-Hostel projects at:

  • University of Lagos
  • University of Abuja
  • University of Jos

The projects have enhanced research capabilities and improved digital learning environments for students and academic communities.

Strategic national assets such as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Federal Secretariats were also connected to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.

Galaxy Backbone’s partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) has further strengthened Nigeria’s fibre backbone by improving network redundancy and enabling scalable broadband expansion into more states and underserved communities.

Beyond infrastructure, the agency has expanded sovereign digital capabilities through its 1Government Cloud platform, which provides secure hosting and shared services for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The locally developed GovMail solution now supports over 100,000 federal civil servants, while upgrades in cybersecurity monitoring, co-location services, and data centre operations have enhanced digital resilience nationwide.

The Service Desk also operates 24/7 to provide nationwide stakeholder support.
