The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has officially launched the ‘Fibre 2 Hostel’ project. It is an ambitious broadband connectivity initiative aimed at delivering high-speed internet directly to student hostels across seven key federal universities. This is a major step towards bridging Nigeria’s digital divide and advancing inclusive education,
The initiative is powered by Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) in partnership with Tizeti, Huawei, and the National Broadband Alliance Nigeria (NBAN). It is designed to provide secure, high-speed broadband that enables online learning, digital research, and innovation. It will also enable authenticated digital platforms for more than 260,000 students nationwide.
The Fibre 2 Hostel project was flagged off at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on May 26, 2025 by Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani. It was subsequently launched at the University of Abuja on May 28, 2025, kicking off a phased rollout to additional institutions.
“We are committed to creating equitable access to digital resources. This project is not just about connectivity. It’s about empowering young Nigerians with the tools to thrive in a connected world,” said Prof. Ibrahim A. Adeyanju, Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone, during the Lagos launch event.
Universities Benefiting from the Fibre 2 Hostel Project include; University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State, University of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Anambra State, University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau State, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Borno State and University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State
While the first two institutions have already been connected, the remaining universities are scheduled for deployment in the coming months.
At the Abuja launch, Prof Adeyanju emphasized the broader national implications. He was represented by Mr. Sani Ibrahim, Executive Director, Finance and Corporate Communications at Galaxy Backbone.
“This project aligns with the Federal Government’s broadband penetration strategy. It is a key pillar of Galaxy Backbone’s mandate to drive digital transformation across Nigeria’s education sector.”
In a goodwill message, Mr. Olarinre Adeladan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, encouraged students to leverage the infrastructure to “build a stronger, digitally empowered Nigeria.”
Industry stakeholders have praised the initiative. Mr. Temitope Osunde, representing Tizeti, called it “a bold move toward building smarter, future-ready campuses.”
Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, Minister of Education, urged students to remain focused on academic and personal growth. Dr Tijani on his own, encouraged responsible use of digital tools. His words: “What you know matters, but what you do with that knowledge matters even more.”
Student leaders from UNILAG and the University of Abuja expressed deep gratitude to the government and its partners. They called the project a “game-changer” for learning outcomes, campus innovation, and student life.
According to Chidi Okpala, Head of Corporate Communications at Galaxy Backbone, the initiative is a landmark in Nigeria’s digital education agenda. It is promoting smart campuses and supporting youth-centered technology access. All of these in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for job creation, digital inclusion, and national development.
