The Federal Government has approved N4 billion for each of 12 selected universities to rehabilitate engineering workshops and procure modern equipment.

Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, announced the intervention in Abuja during the inauguration of the Implementation Committee on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Special High-Impact Projects.

The initiative targets Faculties of Engineering and Technology in Federal Universities of Technology and other conventional universities nationwide. According to Alausa, the funds will upgrade existing laboratories and workshops or support the construction of new facilities where required.

He stressed that the success of the project depends on strict adherence to standards, transparency, and accountability, noting that every facility delivered must meet national development needs.

Beneficiary institutions include Federal University of Technology, Akure, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigerian Army University, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, and University of Ilesa, among others.

An additional N20 billion has been earmarked in the 2026 TETFund guidelines to extend upgrades to more institutions.

The implementation committee will oversee project execution, ensure compliance with specifications and timelines, and recommend sanctions where necessary.

Sonny Echono, TETFund Executive Secretary, said the intervention aligns with efforts to reposition Nigerian universities as innovation hubs and bridge the gap between academic training and industry demands.
