The Federal Government has greenlit a ₦90 billion investment for new water supply projects in the Bwari and Karu areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This major financial commitment is part of an ongoing effort to expand access to clean water for residents.

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT, announced the approval while commissioning a newly rehabilitated ₦50 billion water treatment plant at the Lower Usuma Dam. Wike stated that the new projects in Bwari and Karu would be officially launched this week and are expected to significantly improve water distribution to the FCT’s satellite towns.

According to Wike, the government is committed to providing essential services beyond just road construction, highlighting water as a fundamental necessity. The new projects complement the recently completed Usuma Dam upgrade and are part of broader agreements with Chinese firms like China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group.

The FCT Minister also mentioned progress in other sectors, including education, where numerous schools have been completed or renovated. He has directed the Secretary of Education to publish a list of these projects and organize media tours to showcase the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure in rural areas.

The Bwari and Karu projects are a significant step toward improving the quality of life for residents, building on previous efforts like the Greater Abuja Water Works project, which was reported to be nearing completion in late 2024.
