The Lagos State Government has given traders at the popular Computer Village, Ikeja, an 18-month deadline to relocate to its new permanent site in Katangowa, Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA.

Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, announced the deadline during a stakeholders’ engagement, stressing that the current location in Ikeja was originally designated as a residential area. Oki assured traders that the 15-hectare Katangowa site is fully equipped with the necessary infrastructure for a conducive business environment.

Traders Express Skepticism and Demand Transparency

Despite the government’s renewed commitment, market leaders and traders expressed deep skepticism and demanded clarity on the terms and conditions of the relocation process.

Ahmed Ojikutu, President of the Computer and Allied Product Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN), confirmed the association has formally requested clarification from the government to prevent terms from being changed midway through the move. He emphasized that the market would not move without a clear, documented understanding that ensures the community remains united at the new site.

Key Concerns Raised by Traders:

  • Lack of Trust: Traders cited a history of failed relocation attempts dating back to 2006, leading to a widespread lack of faith in the current proposal.
  • Need for Direct Allocation: Traders are demanding direct allocation of the land at Katangowa so they can manage the development themselves, rather than relying on contractors whose projects may be subject to political changes.
  • Uncertainty Over Land Title: One anonymous trader revealed that the new site remains largely inaccessible and insisted the government has failed to provide official documentation confirming the traders’ authority over the land.

The ultimate goal for the traders is transparency and protection to ensure the proposed move does not become another cycle of unfulfilled promises.
