Drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms including Uber, Bolt, inDrive, and LagRide have commenced a three-day strike in Lagos, protesting low fares and rising operating costs. The industrial action was announced by the Lagos chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria during a press briefing. Steven Iwindoye, the union’s Public Relations Officer, said the strike followed months of complaints from drivers struggling with worsening economic pressures. Youths in Lagos took to the streets on Thursday to protest persistent electricity shortages affecting parts of the state. Marching along major roads, the demonstrators carried placards and chanted slogans such as, “Give us light, we are not asking for too much,” expressing frustration over the prolonged power outage. Protesters highlighted that the ongoing electricity disruptions have disrupted daily activities and negatively impacted small businesses, calling on the Lagos State Government to urgently restore stable power supply. The World Bank has opened applications for the Alan W. Heston Fellowship, offering up to $10,000 to support early-career researchers and statisticians working in economic measurement and international price comparisons. The fellowship supports research projects lasting six to twelve months focused on improving economic statistics, particularly studies related to purchasing power parity (PPP) and global price comparisons. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says it still needs $14.3 billion to support 87 million people facing severe humanitarian crises worldwide in 2026. This was disclosed by Tom Fletcher, who said the agency has so far secured $8.7 billion in funding and pledges under its “hyper-prioritised” humanitarian response plan. The funding forms part of the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) 2026, which seeks $23 billion for urgent life-saving interventions, about a third of the broader $33 billion global humanitarian appeal. Nigeria has received long-acting injectable Lenacapavir (LEN) for HIV prevention, marking a new step in efforts to reduce new infections and expand prevention options. The development was disclosed by Adebobola Bashorun, who heads the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. He said the drug arrived in Nigeria and will be used as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for individuals at risk of HIV infection.
