The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured chairmanship victories in five of the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in Gwagwalada.
Results released by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday showed APC prevailing in:
- Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC)
- Abaji
- Bwari
- Kwali
- Kuje
The PDP, however, clinched victory in Gwagwalada.
In Gwagwalada Area Council, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim polled 22,165 votes, defeating the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who secured 17,788 votes.
The Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, declared Kasim duly elected after fulfilling all legal requirements. Other parties trailed behind, with APGA scoring 1,687 votes and ADC 1,366.
APC won the following seats:
- Bwari: APC’s Joshua Ishaku won with 18,466 votes.
- AMAC: Christopher Maikalangu was re-elected with 40,295 votes, defeating candidates from ADC, SDP, NNPP and PDP.
- Abaji: Umar Abdullahi Abubakar (APC) emerged victorious.
- Kwali: Nuhu Daniel (APC) secured the chairmanship seat.
- Kuje: Danjuma Shekwolo (APC) clinched the highest votes.
The outcome consolidates the APC’s dominance in the FCT, leaving the PDP with only one council.
The FCT elections, conducted on Saturday, were reportedly affected by:
- Low voter turnout
- Allegations of vote buying
- Logistical challenges
- Late arrival of electoral officials
Despite these concerns, INEC completed collation and formally declared winners across the six councils.
The results underscore the APC’s strong foothold in the FCT, while the PDP maintains a presence through its victory in Gwagwalada.
