Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung into the record books, earning an impressive $927 million (about £687 million) worldwide during its opening weekend to become the second-highest global box office debut of all time.
The latest Marvel blockbuster, starring real-life couple Tom Holland and Zendaya, trails only Avengers: Endgame, which opened with more than $1.2 billion globally in 2019.
The film also delivered the second-biggest domestic opening in North American history, grossing $335 million over the weekend.
Its stellar performance provides a timely boost for Marvel Studios, which has faced inconsistent box office results since Avengers: Endgame. The success comes ahead of the highly anticipated release of Avengers: Doomsday in December.
Released last week, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues the story of Peter Parker several years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film follows Parker as he resumes his battle against crime in a world that no longer remembers his identity as Spider-Man.
Critics and audiences have responded enthusiastically, with many praising Holland’s performance as his strongest portrayal of the iconic superhero to date.
Internationally, the film generated $572 million from more than 73,000 cinema screens, including $121 million from China. In the United Kingdom, it collected $49 million during its opening weekend, according to distributor Sony Pictures.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige described the opening as “truly phenomenal,” thanking moviegoers for supporting the theatrical experience.
Brand New Day is Marvel’s final theatrical release before Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to bring together multiple storylines built since Endgame.
Marvel has struggled to replicate the blockbuster success of its earlier films in recent years. Although titles such as The Marvels and Thunderbolts recovered their production costs, they ranked among the studio’s lowest-grossing releases.
The Spider-Man franchise, however, remains one of Marvel’s biggest commercial successes. Its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, generated nearly $2 billion at the global box office.
The film’s success also signals continued recovery for the global cinema industry after the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift toward streaming platforms.
North American box office revenue is now on course to exceed $10 billion for the first time since 2019, driven by blockbuster releases including Toy Story 5, Michael, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, each of which has already surpassed $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
Industry analysts also expect Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey to join the billion-dollar club, reinforcing optimism that cinemas are regaining momentum after years of disruption.
