Sahara Power Enterprises Group (SPEG), one of Nigeria’s leading private power companies, has commenced construction of a 12MW Independent Power Plant (IPP) at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric Plc in Lagos.
The $12 million project, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027, is designed to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve the reliability of power supply to businesses, communities and public institutions in parts of Lagos.
Sahara Power disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, August 27, 2026, following the groundbreaking ceremony for the project.
The Ogba IPP will comprise six 2MW gas-fired generating units, with electricity supplied to industrial clusters, businesses, residential communities and public institutions across Ogba, Acme Road, Wemco Road and surrounding areas.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of SPEG, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to developing practical solutions to Nigeria’s energy challenges.
“This initiative is about much more than breaking ground for a new power plant. It represents a bold commitment to Nigeria’s energy future and our determination to deliver dependable, efficient, and sustainable electricity to businesses and communities,” Adesina said.
He said greater availability and reliability of electricity would help improve productivity, stimulate business growth and create additional value across the local economy.
The facility will deploy modern gas-powered generation technology designed to meet established environmental, operational and safety standards.
Adesina commended the Federal Government, Lagos State Government, Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Ikeja Electric, Cummins and other stakeholders for supporting the project.
Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electric, described the project as an important step towards improving the quality, reliability and sustainability of electricity supplied to customers within the company’s network.
“At Ikeja Electric, our priority is to partner with forward-looking investors and developers such as SPEG to deliver innovative solutions that improve customer experience and reliable electricity supply across our network,” Onyelucheya said.
He said the project would provide a more dependable and cost-effective electricity source while supporting business growth and economic development in the areas covered by the plant.
Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, said improved electricity supply would help create a more favourable environment for businesses, attract investment and support employment opportunities in the community.
Cummins West Africa Limited will undertake construction of the plant.

He said the Ogba project forms part of SPEG’s broader efforts to deploy innovative solutions across Nigeria’s electricity value chain and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
The Ogba IPP is the latest in a series of investments by Sahara Power aimed at strengthening electricity generation and supply across Nigeria.
In June 2025, Sahara Power Group, in partnership with Crescendough Nigeria Limited, commissioned the 180MW Afam II Power Plant in Rivers State.
The project, which was conceived, managed and delivered in 16 months using predominantly Nigerian expertise, was positioned as an important addition to Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity.
The latest investment in Ogba highlights the growing role of private-sector capital in addressing Nigeria’s persistent electricity supply and infrastructure challenges.
With completion targeted for the first quarter of 2027, the 12MW Ogba IPP is expected to provide additional and more reliable electricity to businesses, households and institutions within its coverage area.
