The Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) has officially announced the commencement of the Public Relations Consultancy Practice Code (PRCPC) 2026, marking a major regulatory milestone designed to protect client investments, standardise agency-client engagements, and enforce strict professional accountability across the industry.
Formally adopted on September 11, 2026 by the PRCAN Executive Committee, under the statutory authority of NIPR Bye-Law No. 3 of 1993 (as amended in 2026), the new Code establishes an operational framework for public relations consultancies. For corporate decision-makers, marketing directors, and procurement leaders, the Code introduces clear operational standards that safeguard client interests and eliminate market ambiguities.
Speaking on the formal implementation of the regulatory framework, the Chief Executive Officer of PRCAN, Mrs. Nkechi Ali-Balogun, PhD, fnipr, emphasised the binding nature of the new policy:
“The Public Relations Consultancy Practice Code 2026 formally enters into force across the Federal Republic of Nigeria effective September 11, 2026. All consultancy engagements, competitive pitch invitations, RFP issuances, and professional agency operations initiated on or after this date shall strictly comply with the provisions of the Code.”
The PRCAN CEO further highlighted the enforcement mechanisms embedded within the framework to protect client-agency relationships:”Adherence to this Code is a statutory requirement tied to NIPR Bye-Law No. 3 (2026). Non-compliance, unauthorised pitch solicitation without fee structures, IP infringements, or ethical breaches shall be referred to the Consultancy Practice Standards Panel (CPSP) and the NIPR Council for adjudication and penalty enforcement.”
Key client benefits under the new 2026 Practice Code include clear protocols protecting proprietary agency concepts while establishing standardised pitch parameters, ensuring corporate decision-makers engage in fair, transparent, and legally sound competitive bidding as well as institutional oversight recourse through the newly constituted Consultancy Practice Standards Panel (CPSP) made up of representatives of the Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and PRCAN. In the event of agency contract breaches, ethical lapses, or service non-performance, clients benefit from this panel equipped to adjudicate disputes and enforce compliance.
The statement was signed Dr Monday Ashibogwu fnipr, Public Relations Officer, PRCAN.
