The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is deploying a dedicated Passport Intervention Team to the United Kingdom from August 10, 2026, to clear pending passport applications and process new and renewal applications for Nigerians in the country.
The NIS announced the intervention on Sunday, saying the exercise was directed by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Under the directive, Kemi Nandap, Comptroller-General of Immigration, has been instructed to deploy the team from the NIS headquarters to work with the Nigerian High Commission in London.
The intervention will cover Nigerians with pending passport applications, first-time applicants and those seeking to renew passports with less than one year remaining before expiry.
Applicants are required to present completed application forms and proof of payment during enrolment.
The NIS said the intervention team will visit designated cities across the United Kingdom to conduct passport enrolment and processing.
The move is expected to make passport services more accessible to Nigerians outside London and help reduce the backlog of applications.
“The Intervention Team is scheduled to arrive in the United Kingdom on 10th August, 2026, and will work in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission to facilitate the processing and issuance of pending, new and renewal passport applications,” the NIS said.
It added that the team would visit designated cities to enable eligible applicants across the country to access the exercise.
However, the immigration service warned applicants against travelling to any location until the official schedule is released.
Applicants are expected to wait for details on the cities, dates, venues and enrolment times and to monitor the official communication channels of the Nigerian High Commission in the UK.
The NIS also confirmed that its digital passport application channels remain operational throughout the intervention.
This includes the Contactless Passport Application System, while applicants who prefer to receive their passports at home can continue to use the home delivery service.
The UK intervention therefore complements the NIS’s digital passport services by providing physical enrolment and processing support for applicants with outstanding or new applications.
The latest intervention is part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve passport services for Nigerians living abroad.
In April 2025, the NIS launched the second phase of its contactless biometric passport application system in the United States, Jamaica, Mexico and Brazil.
The system, available through the NIS Mobile application, allows eligible Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting a passport centre for biometric enrolment.
The UK intervention adds an in-person option for applicants who require enrolment or assistance with pending applications, while the digital channels remain available.
