The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has crossed a major financial milestone, generating over ₦10 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year. This achievement is part of the agency’s renewed efforts to reposition itself as a key player in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

Tola Odeyemi, Postmaster General and CEO, disclosed this during her appearance on Arise TV’s The Beam with Soonest Nathaniel. She attributed the impressive revenue growth to ongoing digital transformation, improved service delivery, and efforts to curb financial leakages.

“₦10 billion is just the beginning,” Odeyemi stated. “With the right systems in place, NIPOST can achieve far more.”

Digital Transformation Driving Growth

Odeyemi highlighted several strategic initiatives that are fueling NIPOST’s resurgence:

  • Digitization of Core Operations: Streamlining internal processes to improve efficiency and eliminate revenue losses.
  • E-commerce Partnerships: Collaborating with Nigeria’s fast-growing online retail sector to manage logistics and deliveries.
  • PostMoni & Digital Services: Expanding access to financial services, particularly in underserved rural areas.
  • National Addressing System: Enhancing address accuracy to support public services such as emergency response, security, national census, and future innovations like drone deliveries.

She emphasized the potential of the addressing system, noting that if adopted by institutions such as the Nigeria Police, it could significantly improve crime prevention and public service delivery. “Tying people and entities to verifiable addresses will enhance policing, planning, and even emergency response,” she explained.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Odeyemi said NIPOST is on a path toward full financial sustainability within the next five years. This will be driven by the creation of new revenue streams, stronger logistics operations, and the restoration of public trust through reliable service delivery.

Addressing previous concerns over lost or stolen parcels, she assured Nigerians that improved logistics systems and enhanced security measures are now in place to protect customers’ items.

Reinventing NIPOST for the Digital Era

Odeyemi outlined her ambition to transform NIPOST into a modern, efficient, and inclusive public institution.

“I envision a NIPOST that is digitized, trusted, and accessible to everyone — from the most remote villages to the busiest urban centers. A postal service that Nigerians can be proud of,” she said.

She concluded by reaffirming her commitment to making NIPOST a driving force for inclusive economic growth and a core component of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
