Nigeria’s Pension Assets Hit N31.8 Trillion, Gain N3.8 Trillion in Eight Months

Nigeria’s pension fund assets under management rose by N3.8 trillion in the first eight months of 2026, reaching a record N31.8 trillion as of August 31, according to data from the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

The latest unaudited figures show that pension assets increased from N28.04 trillion in January to N31.8 trillion in August, representing a 13.41 per cent year-to-date increase.

The growth underscores the continued expansion of Nigeria’s contributory pension industry, despite persistent macroeconomic pressures.

On a month-on-month basis, pension assets increased by N289.4 billion, or 0.92 per cent, from N31.5 trillion recorded at the end of July.

PenCom’s data also showed that the number of Retirement Savings Account (RSA) contributors rose to 11,391,008 as of August 2026.

The growing contributor base, alongside investment income and pension contributions, continues to support the expansion of the country’s pension assets and strengthens the sector’s role as a source of long-term domestic capital.

Federal Government securities remained the largest asset class in the pension industry, accounting for N17.80 trillion of total pension assets as of August.

The sizeable allocation reflects the continued preference of Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) for government-backed instruments, which are generally regarded as lower-risk investments.

Domestic equities accounted for N6.32 trillion, while pension funds held N280.66 billion in foreign equities.

Money market instruments, including fixed deposits, commercial papers and bank acceptances, accounted for N3.27 trillion.

Corporate debt securities represented N2.21 trillion, while investments in mutual funds stood at N326.64 billion.

PenCom’s data also showed continued investment in alternative asset classes as PFAs seek to diversify portfolios and balance risk with long-term returns.

Infrastructure funds attracted N344.62 billion, while real estate investments stood at N132.81 billion.

Private equity investments amounted to N267.01 billion, while cash and other assets totalled N462.42 billion.

In dollar terms, PenCom estimated the total value of Nigeria’s pension assets at approximately $23.9 billion as of August 2026.

Nigeria’s pension industry has expanded steadily under the Contributory Pension Scheme, supported by rising contributions, investment returns and increasing participation.

With assets reaching N31.8 trillion and RSA membership exceeding 11.3 million, pension funds have become an increasingly significant pool of long-term domestic capital.

However, the latest portfolio figures show that Federal Government securities continue to account for more than half of total pension assets, while allocations to equities, infrastructure, private equity and other alternative investments remain comparatively smaller.

The asset mix highlights the balancing act facing PFAs as they seek to preserve pension savings while generating returns and providing capital for longer-term investment across the Nigerian economy.
