Nigeria’s hunger crisis is deepening, with the country falling to 115th out of 123 countries in the 2025 Global Hunger Index (GHI).
This drop from the 110th position in 2024 places Nigeria further into the “serious food crisis” category.
Deteriorating Situation
- GHI Score: Nigeria’s GHI score for 2025 is 32.8 points, a slight rise from 32.3 in 2008, showing the country has remained in the “serious food crisis” range for the last 17 years.
- Child Health Metrics (2020-2024): The crisis is evident in child health, with 11.6 per cent of children suffering from wasting (low weight-for-height) and 10.5 per cent of children dying before their fifth birthday (child mortality).
- Key Drivers: The report links the worsening food insecurity to major disruptions in the agricultural sector, including the killing of farmers, exceptional heavy rainfall, and devastating floods that wiped out large areas of farmland earlier in the year.
The GHI, published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilf, tracks hunger globally. The report highlights that Nigeria is the second country in West Africa to be categorised in the serious food crisis zone.
