Nigeria has introduced a new Livestock Development Policy aimed at transforming its agricultural sector, strengthening food security, and creating jobs. The policy was unveiled by Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development, at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Global Forum for Animal Feed and Feed Regulators in Rome, Italy.
The new framework is a core part of the current administration’s plan to modernize the livestock sector. A central focus is improving animal feed and fodder systems, which the government sees as the backbone of a resilient livestock industry.
By enhancing feed quality and supply chains, the policy intends to:
- Increase productivity and improve animal health.
- Expand access to protein-rich foods to combat malnutrition.
- Drive innovation and efficiency through modern technology adoption.
The government believes sustainable feed production will act as a major catalyst for economic transformation, boosting farmers’ earnings and strengthening rural livelihoods.
