The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has extended the deadline for filing individual annual income tax returns to April 21, 2026, following increased pressure on its digital filing platform.

The agency said the decision was driven by a surge in usage of its eTax system after the earlier deadline was shifted to April 14, resulting in heavy traffic and processing demand.

In a statement signed by Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude, LIRS noted that the extension is aimed at giving taxpayers more time to complete their filings smoothly and without disruption.

According to the agency, the additional window is designed to enhance convenience while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of submissions. However, it stressed that this latest extension should be considered final and urged taxpayers to comply promptly.

LIRS explained that the growing adoption of its eTax platform reflects improved taxpayer engagement but also necessitated the adjustment to accommodate demand.

The filing deadline had initially been set for March 31 before being extended to April 14. The latest shift to April 21 marks a further effort to boost compliance and ease the filing process.

The agency reaffirmed that all tax returns must be submitted through its eTax platform, which remains the only approved channel. It added that digital filing is improving efficiency, reducing errors, and strengthening transparency in tax administration.

LIRS also reminded taxpayers that filing annual returns is a statutory obligation, warning that failure to comply could attract penalties under existing tax laws.

The move aligns with broader efforts to modernise tax collection and improve revenue generation across Nigeria’s evolving tax landscape.
