The Lagos State Government will temporarily close several roads on Lagos Island on Monday, April 6, 2026, to allow for the staging of the Fanti Carnival.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in a statement shared on the state’s official X account on Friday. The road closures will take effect from 7:00 a.m.
The traffic diversions will impact major routes around the carnival procession, including:
- King George V Road (by Mobil Filling Station)
- Onikan Roundabout (inbound to Tafawa Balewa Square)
- Flagstaff House (inbound to TBS)
- Outer Marina by State House (inbound to TBS)
- Campbell Street (by Old Defence Building)
- Catholic Mission Street (by St. Nicholas Church)
Motorists and residents are advised to plan ahead and use alternative routes, as large crowds are expected for the cultural event. Traffic management officials will be deployed across affected areas to manage flow and reduce congestion.
The government acknowledged the inconvenience the closures may cause but noted that the measures are necessary to ensure safety and a smooth carnival experience for participants and spectators.

Road closures are common in Lagos during major events such as cultural festivals, marathons, and infrastructure works. Similar diversions were recently implemented during the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in February 2026.
Commuters across Lagos Island and surrounding areas should expect delays and adjust travel plans accordingly.
