Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, has disbursed N2.4 billion to 1,075 families of police officers who died in active service, reinforcing efforts to improve welfare and honour fallen personnel.

The payment, made under the Group Life Assurance and I-G Family Welfare Schemes, was announced on Wednesday during a cheque presentation ceremony in Abuja.

According to the police chief, the N2.4 billion covers next of kin of deceased officers across multiple policy years, spanning from 2018/2019 to 2025/2026. The disbursement also includes recovered insurance obligations that had remained unpaid for years.

Disu emphasised that officer welfare is central to his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, stressing the institution’s duty to support families of personnel who paid the ultimate price.

He described the exercise as more than a financial intervention, calling it a recognition of the courage and sacrifice of officers who served the country.

The police boss also extended condolences to bereaved families, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to stand by them.

Delayed payment of benefits to families of deceased public servants has long been a concern in Nigeria. In some cases, families have had to pursue legal action to access entitlements, highlighting systemic inefficiencies.

The latest disbursement signals a move to address part of that backlog and restore confidence in the system.

Bola Tinubu recently swore in Disu as substantive IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. Since assuming office, he has pledged reforms focused on professionalism, accountability, and citizen-centred policing.

Disu, who joined the police in 1992, has held several operational and administrative roles across states, building a reputation in intelligence-led policing and field command.
