The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) has expressed deep sadness over the death of its former President and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, who died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
Oladipo served as GOCOP President from 2017 to 2021 and was among the publishers who played a significant role in shaping the organisation during its formative years.
His death has been described as a major loss to GOCOP, The Eagle Online and the wider Nigerian media industry.
Oladipo began his journalism career in the traditional media, where he worked as a journalist and editor before moving into digital publishing. He later became publisher of The Eagle Online, bringing years of newsroom and editorial experience to the emerging online media space.
At a time when digital publishing was still developing in Nigeria, Oladipo was among those who recognised the importance of creating a professional community for online publishers.
During his four-year tenure as GOCOP president, he represented the Guild at various engagements and worked with members as the organisation navigated the opportunities and challenges created by the rapid growth of online journalism.
The current GOCOP President, Danlami Nmodu, described Oladipo’s death as painful and said his contribution to the development of the Guild would not be forgotten.
“Dotun played an important role in the development of GOCOP. He led the Guild for four years at a time when there was still a lot of work to be done to establish online publishers as an important part of the media. His contribution will always be remembered,” Nmodu said.
He added that Oladipo combined his experience in journalism with an understanding of the business of publishing.
“Dotun understood journalism and he understood the business of publishing. He was passionate about the place of online media in Nigeria and he gave his time to the growth of the Guild. We are saddened by his passing,” he said.
Oladipo’s career spanned the period when the Nigerian media landscape was undergoing a major transformation. As social media and digital platforms changed how Nigerians accessed and shared information, online publishers became an increasingly important part of the country’s media ecosystem.
GOCOP said Oladipo made a notable contribution to that transition, both through his work as a publisher and through his leadership of the Guild.
The organisation also remembered him as a colleague who maintained strong relationships with publishers across the country and continued to take an interest in the affairs of GOCOP after leaving office.
A close associate and longtime professional colleague of Oladipo has also provided an account of the journalist’s final hours.
According to the colleague, Oladipo and his wife went to the gym on Tuesday morning before returning to their home in Greenfield Estate, OPIC, Isheri.
After taking his bath, Oladipo left for his office and worked for about three hours before he began feeling unwell.
The colleague said Oladipo subsequently got into his car and drove himself towards the hospital.
However, while he was close to the hospital, his condition reportedly worsened. He pulled over by the roadside and asked a passerby to contact his doctor.
According to the account, the doctor, responding to the urgency of the situation, travelled by commercial motorcycle to beat traffic and reach Oladipo as quickly as possible.
But by the time the doctor arrived at the journalist’s car, it was too late.
The colleague, who described Oladipo as a “gentle giant,” said he believed his friend may have suffered cardiac arrest, although no official medical cause of death has been announced.
Oladipo is survived by his family.
GOCOP has extended its condolences to his family, the management and staff of The Eagle Online, as well as his friends and colleagues across the Nigerian media industry.
The Guild said it would work with his family and associates on plans to honour his memory and celebrate his contribution to journalism and digital publishing in Nigeria.
