Nigeria is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in Africa’s digital economy. This September, the country will host the inaugural GITEX NIGERIA, a major technology event designed to bring together global tech brands, government leaders, and startups. The goal is to drive innovation and help Nigeria achieve its ambitious target of a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
A Platform for Innovation and Talent
GITEX NIGERIA is a collaborative effort supported by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Lagos State Government. The event, running from September 1-4, 2025, will take place in both Abuja and Lagos.
- Abuja Summit: The event kicks off in Abuja with a high-level summit focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure. According to Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, this is an opportunity for Nigeria to move from being a “consumer of AI to becoming a net producer of talent and solutions.”
- Lagos Tech Expo: The event then moves to Lagos, where the GITEX NIGERIA Tech Expo and Startup Festival will bring together a wide range of industry leaders. This will be a major hub for international investors to discover and support African startups.
- Global Support: The event has attracted major global tech players, including IBM, which sees Nigeria as a “strategic priority.” The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will also present its timbuktoo initiative, a program designed to support startups tackling global challenges.
Bolstering Nigeria’s Tech Ecosystem
Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director General of NITDA, stated that GITEX NIGERIA is “more than an event; it is the cornerstone for Africa’s digital renaissance.” By focusing on partnerships, talent development, and robust digital infrastructure, the event aims to reinforce Nigeria’s position as a global competitor in the digital age.
