The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is set to fully digitalise Nigeria’s licensing system by introducing contactless biometric capture and on-the-spot printing of driver’s licenses.

Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed announced that this move is designed to create a single, digital process nationwide, which will eliminate the issuance of temporary licenses and bring an end to long-standing delays in the system.

Clearing the Backlog

The Corps Marshal also provided an update on efforts to clear the national backlog of pending license applications:

  • Increased Production: Following an upgrade to its printing facility, the FRSC has increased its daily production capacity to 15,000 licenses.
  • Target: The goal is to clear all outstanding licenses by November 2025.
  • Current Status: Of the 800,000 licenses backlogged nationwide, 400,000 have already been printed.
  • Uncollected Licenses: Mohammed urged applicants to visit designated centres to collect their $\text{206,000}$ uncollected licenses.

This new digital system, which builds on earlier efforts to streamline the process, is part of the FRSC’s commitment to using technology to improve service delivery, reduce waiting times, and enhance data integrity.
