The Nigerian government has set aside N300 billion in the 2025 budget to install solar power at federal universities and major medical institutions nationwide. The goal is to provide a reliable power supply that will improve services and operations.

Abubakar Bichi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, announced the initiative while launching the first project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH). He stated that President Bola Tinubu approved the funding after discussions about the poor power supply affecting hospitals and universities. Bichi added that the project will provide AKTH with up to seven megawatts of solar power, while other institutions will also benefit. The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Uche Nnaji, noted that the move will significantly cut down on the huge monthly electricity and diesel costs currently faced by these institutions.
