The Federal Government has released N2.3 billion to federal universities to settle outstanding arrears owed to both academic and non-academic staff.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, announced the disbursement on Wednesday, confirming that the funds, processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), should start reaching the accounts of beneficiaries immediately.
Commitment to Long-Term Stability
Dr. Alausa emphasised that the Tinubu administration is committed not just to clearing inherited obligations but to implementing sustainable reforms that ensure long-term stability in the tertiary education sector.
- Financial Discipline: The Minister stressed that all commitments made to staff unions must be financially realistic and align with approved budgetary provisions.
- Third-Party Deductions: The government is also finalising the release of third-party non-statutory deductions and pension remittances to NUPEMCO, which is expected to be completed in the coming days.
- Needs Assessment: Funds have also been released under the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities project, with sustained budgetary provisions in place for its continuity.
Mainstreaming Earned Academic Allowance
In a key move aimed at streamlining payments and reducing future delays, the Federal Government plans to fully integrate the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) into university staff salaries starting in 2026. This integration is expected to ensure prompt and predictable disbursements going forward.
The announcement follows the recent suspension of a two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) after renewed engagements with the government, signalling progress in resolving long-standing welfare and funding issues.
