The Federal Government has completed and commissioned critical failed sections of the Gwada–Shiroro Road in Niger State, restoring access to Gwada Town after months of disruption.
The disclosure was made in a statement issued Monday by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The intervention included emergency repairs to washed-out embankments and the replacement of a collapsed culvert that had cut off movement into and out of the town.
The Ministry said the project forms part of 260 emergency and special intervention road projects nationwide aimed at addressing critical failures across Nigeria’s road network.
The Gwada–Shiroro works involved rehabilitating severely damaged road sections and constructing a two-cell box culvert to replace a failed one-cell pipe culvert that collapsed due to design defects and excessive load.
The projects were executed by Wise Spin Limited and High Dee Construction Limited and have been substantially completed and opened to traffic.
The Federal Controller of Works in Niger State, Engineer Eyitayo Aluko, representing the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, described the intervention as “two projects in one,” combining culvert reconstruction with full road rehabilitation.
The new 2.0m × 2.0m two-cell box culvert was designed to improve water flow, enhance structural stability, and ensure long-term durability.
Beyond the culvert, failed sections of the road were rehabilitated through embankment remediation, stone base and granular course laying, and asphalt surfacing.
The Gwada–Shiroro Road is a strategic access route to the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station and surrounding communities.
The completed works restore safe movement for residents and commuters, improve the transport of goods and services, reduce travel delays and accidents, and support economic activity in the area.
The Ministry noted that similar interventions are ongoing across Niger State, including work on the Bida–Lemu–Wushishi–Zungeru, Jebba–Mokwa–Bokani Junction, and Minna–Zungeru–Tegina roads.
Road construction and rehabilitation remain a major focus of the Federal Government in 2026, with the Ministry of Works allocated about ₦3.49 trillion for highway projects nationwide.
