A gathering of technology industry leaders at the Titans of Tech Conference and Expo 2024 has underscored the pivotal role of innovation in driving Africa’s development. Themed “Tech for Good,” the conference explored how technological advancements can be harnessed to address the continent’s challenges and unlock its immense potential.
Hosted by Dr. Don Pedro Aganbi, Managing Consultant, TechTV Nigeria, the conference featured prominent speakers including Pastor Lekan Balogun, CEO of NetAccess Systems; Engineer Abisoye-Coker Odusote, Director-General of the Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC); and Dr. Martin Ikpehai, Vice President of the Information Security Society of Africa.
Engineer Abisoye-Coker Odusote highlighted NIMC’s vision to leverage digital technology for national development. She emphasized the importance of a secure identity management system in promoting financial inclusion and enhancing governance. “NIMC’s initiatives, like the National Identification Number (NIN), are crucial in improving resource distribution, economic forecasting, and policy formulation,” Odusote stated.
The NIMC DG was ably represented by Dr Alvan Ikoku, Technical Adviser, NIMC.
Pastor Lekan Balogun discussed the significant economic opportunities presented by technology. He stressed the need for investment in digital infrastructure to stimulate e-commerce, remote work, and financial technology. Balogun also highlighted the role of technology in enhancing agricultural practices and providing renewable energy solutions, particularly in underserved rural areas.
The first-panel session, “Tech for Good,” explored the beneficial applications of technology in various sectors. Jide Awe, CEO of Jidaw Systems, spoke on precision engineering in agriculture. At the same time, Tinuade Oguntuyi, Head of Core Networks ICSL, discussed the dual nature of technology and its potential for both positive and negative impacts.
The second-panel session, “AI: Hype and Reality,” examined the practical applications of artificial intelligence and the need to manage expectations. Panelists, including Amos Emmanuel, Tobi Ayeni (Miss Tech), Seyi Akindeinde, Chigozie Anyasor, and Olufemi Kalejaiye, agreed on AI’s potential while stressing the importance of aligning it with real-world problems and human creativity.
The final panel, “Imperatives for Securing Nigeria’s Digital Space,” addressed the critical issue of cybersecurity. Experts, including Dr. Martin Ikpehai, Olusegun Johnson, and Deepak Mehta, highlighted the increasing threat of cyberattacks and the need for robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data.
The conference concluded with key takeaways emphasizing the necessity of investing in digital infrastructure, using artificial intelligence responsibly, and fostering an environment conducive to technological innovation. As Africa advances its digital journey, collaborative efforts between government, private sector, and civil society will be crucial in harnessing technology for sustainable development.
