The Canadian government has officially expanded its online passport renewal service to all eligible adult citizens nationwide, lifting previous restrictions that limited digital application slots.
The major expansion was announced by Lena Metlege Diab, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, as part of an ongoing modernisation initiative aimed at streaming public services and drastically reducing the need for physical, in-person visits.
Under the updated digital portal, eligible applicants can submit their renewal application, pay fees, and upload required documents entirely online, eliminating the hassle of mailing physical paperwork or visiting a Service Canada Centre.
The federal government highlighted that the expanded digital service will offer particular relief to Canadians residing in rural or remote communities, as well as individuals facing mobility constraints.
“Increasing access to online renewal gives eligible Canadians a simpler, more convenient way to renew their passports, without unnecessary barriers or delays,” Minister Diab stated.

Processing Timeline: Online renewals adhere to the standard 20-business-day processing timeframe used for mail-in and simplified in-person adult applications.

Photo Standards: Unlike traditional paper applications, digital submissions require a high-resolution, commercially taken photograph provided directly as a digital file by a commercial photographer.

Urgent Travel Restrictions: Travelers requiring expedited or emergency service cannot use the online renewal portal and must continue applying in person at designated passport offices offering 10-business-day or urgent processing.

Domestic Scope: The online renewal portal is currently restricted to applicants residing within Canada; citizens living abroad must still apply via their nearest Canadian embassy or consulate.
To ensure transparency, the portal features a real-time status tracker allowing citizens to monitor their application progress as it moves through the processing system. For citizens who prefer traditional methods, in-person and mail-in options remain fully operational.
