Nigeria’s annual inflation rate ticked up to 33.95 per cent in May. However, month-on-month headline inflation slowed to 2.14 per cent in May 2024 from 2.29 per cent in April 2024, the second broad-based decline since October 2023. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, inflation quickened to 33.95 per cent in May 2024 from 33.69 per cent in April 2024, for the seventeenth consecutive month driven by food and non-alcoholic beverages. The Lagos State government has set up a public health emergency operation as a cholera outbreak tears through Lagos, claiming 15 lives and spreading suspected cases across 29 wards. Akin Abayomi, Commissioner for Health in a statement said a surveillance team confirmed 17 cases from a total of 350 suspected cases, 88 percent resulting in deaths. Ghana’s state-owned electricity company has announced a three-week power interruption following a significant reduction in gas supply from Nigeria.
