The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) is set to convene its Second Strategic Stakeholders’ Meeting on August 15, 2025, in Abuja. This high-level gathering will focus on the theme: “Rallying Critical Stakeholders to Drive the Successful Execution of the Executive Order on Critical National Information Infrastructure.”

This vital dialogue follows a recent Executive Order from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), which formally recognized telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII). This designation is a major step for Nigeria’s digital economy, promising a more secure and investment-friendly environment for telecom operators and service providers.

ATCON, led by its National President, Executive Council, and member companies, is inviting Commissioners of ICT and Digital Economy, Permanent Secretaries, and Heads of ICT Agencies from all 36 states, along with key Federal Ministries and regulatory bodies, to participate.

“The effective implementation of this Executive Order hinges significantly on continuous engagement and collaboration with all key stakeholders,” said Mr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, President of ATCON. He emphasized the crucial role of state-level leaders: “Our 36 State Commissioners hold the key to ensuring that telecom infrastructure is not only protected but also developed to its full potential.”

This landmark development highlights the Nigerian government’s commitment to safeguarding its digital infrastructure, which is essential for national security, economic competitiveness, and public safety. The CNII designation is expected to drastically reduce vandalism and service disruptions, ultimately improving the quality and reach of telecom services nationwide.

The strategic meeting aims to achieve several critical goals:

  • Secure State-Level Commitment and Collaboration: Promote a unified national approach by encouraging state governments to commit to the Executive Order’s objectives, including creating supportive policies and local initiatives that protect telecom infrastructure.
  • Accelerate Broadband Deployment and Economic Impact: Build partnerships that leverage broadband as a tool for job creation, poverty alleviation, and innovation across state economies.
  • Encourage Nationwide Investment by ATCON Members: Nurture equitable industry participation across the Federation by encouraging ATCON members to invest in underserved and high-potential regions, ensuring balanced digital development.

This meeting is expected to be a pivotal moment in aligning national and subnational priorities to secure and expand Nigeria’s vital telecom infrastructure.
