Afrinvest West Africa’s sponsorship of Rangers International FC has evolved from what was initially viewed as a corporate social responsibility initiative into a powerful case study on the value of strategic sports partnerships. Ike Chioke, Group Managing Director, Afrinvest, made this revelation in a recent interview in Lagos.

Speaking on the impact of the partnership, which was formalised in October 2023, Chioke said the relationship has exceeded expectations and demonstrated how football can serve as a platform for business growth, community engagement and long-term value creation.

“When we signed the deal, we saw it largely as a CSR platform and perhaps an opportunity to generate some publicity. We did not have very high expectations,” Chioke said. “Today, it has become clear that Rangers’ success is more than a football story. It is a masterclass in vision, resilience and strategic brand building.”

According to him, the partnership has reinforced the commercial potential of football, particularly in a country where clubs have traditionally struggled to maximise sponsorship opportunities.

“Every part of the jersey can serve as an advertising platform. More sponsorship translates into more revenue, better player welfare, improved facilities and greater competitiveness,” he said.

He noted that while winning domestic titles is important, Nigerian clubs face greater challenges when competing on the continental stage. Factors such as travel logistics, accommodation, feeding, climate adaptation and player welfare often play a decisive role in CAF competitions.

“Success in African football is not just about talent and tactics. It is also about preparation, planning and resources,” Chioke observed.

Beyond supporting football operations, Afrinvest has also expanded its focus to fan engagement. The company introduced branded merchandise, promotional campaigns and community activations aimed at deepening the relationship between the club, supporters and the sponsor.

The initiative, he said, helped transform fans from passive spectators into active stakeholders.

One of the key lessons from the partnership has been the importance of building emotional connections with communities.

“As Rangers’ profile grew, so did awareness of the Afrinvest brand. Football gave us visibility and engagement that traditional advertising often struggles to achieve,” Chioke said.

He cited the company’s growing recognition in Enugu and other parts of the country as evidence of football’s effectiveness as a marketing platform.

Chioke also disclosed plans to support Rangers players beyond their football careers by introducing them to savings, investment and wealth creation opportunities.

He said Afrinvest hopes to help players convert temporary sporting success into long-term financial security through financial literacy programmes and investment initiatives.

“Football careers are short. We want players to have sustainable futures long after they leave the pitch,” he said.

For Chioke, the partnership is underpinned by a shared culture of resilience. He said Rangers’ famous “Never Say Die” spirit mirrors Afrinvest’s own journey through economic challenges, policy shifts and market disruptions.

“When I look at Rangers, I see determination, resilience, teamwork and discipline. Those are the same qualities that drive successful businesses,” he said.

Looking ahead, Chioke expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to strengthen both organisations while demonstrating that Nigerian football can be commercially viable, professionally managed and socially impactful.

“The story of Afrinvest and Rangers is bigger than football. It is about vision, nation-building, wealth creation and long-term value. We believe the best chapters are still ahead,” he added.
