Africa Gas Transport Company Limited (AfricaGTC), backed by Dutch clean-energy company, Energy Ventures B.V., is set to harness flared gas in Nigeria, which has long posed environmental and economic challenges, into a useful resource.
AfricaGTC is the Nigerian subsidiary of Energy Ventures, established to develop the FlareOut® project in Nigeria and drive local partnerships for its implementation. It is set to roll out a pilot project of the FlareOut solution to capture, process and utilise otherwise wasted associated gas at its Agbada-2 site near Port Harcourt.
With a focus on harnessing abundant and often wasted energy sources, Energy Ventures is involved in producing usable energy from waste gas destined for flaring, biowaste and waste heat recovered from industrial and power processes.
A team from the Netherlands-based company will be in Nigeria this week to visit the project site, hold discussions with executives of the Port Harcourt Distribution Company Limited and meet with top officials at the Ministry of Power in Abuja.
“Our engagement this week is about building the partnerships needed to demonstrate how gas that is routinely flared can be converted into clean energy, economic value and tangible benefits for Nigerian communities,” said the Director of AfricaGTC, Herbert Okibe.
The objective of the visit, according to Jessica Essien, the Managing Director of Afrinvest Capital, the financial adviser to Energy Ventures, is to alert energy stakeholders, regulators and discerning investors to the FlareOut investment opportunity.
Deploying FlareOut® provides on-site electricity and liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) to communities that lack access to clean energy.
Carbon credit revenues enhance the economic viability of FlareOut® projects, creating additional incentives for operators to adopt and scale deployment.
AfricaGTC is registered with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) to develop the FlareOut® pilot project in Nigeria.
FlareOut®, a modular system housed in a standard shipping container, is designed to capture and process gas from small-scale flaring sites and convert it to LPG, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving energy access in underserved regions.
