Abdul Samad Rabiu, BUA Group Chairman, has reaffirmed his pledge to reward Nigeria’s Super Eagles with $500,000, despite the team’s 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.
Rabiu made the pledge on Wednesday night shortly after the dramatic encounter, which ended Nigeria’s quest for a place in the final and sent Morocco through to their first AFCON final in 50 years.
In a message posted on X, the billionaire industrialist praised the Super Eagles for their courage and commitment throughout the tournament.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” Rabiu wrote.
He said the team’s spirit, unity, and passion mattered more than the result, noting that the players left everything on the field.
Rabiu confirmed that he would still fulfil the $500,000 pledge as a reward for the team’s hard work and dedication.
“As a token of appreciation for your remarkable journey and effort, I am still going ahead to fulfil the pledge of $500,000. This is in recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you have brought to our nation,” he said.
He urged the players to remain confident, adding that the experience and lessons from the tournament would drive future success.
Nigeria will now face Egypt in the third-place playoff on Saturday, while Morocco will take on Senegal in Sunday’s final.
