Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor has announced plans on Thursday, June 19, 2025, to recruit an additional 4,000 teachers for primary and secondary schools. This initiative, revealed during his monthly media chat, “Gov. Alex Otti Speaks to Abians,” will bring the total number of new teachers in the state to 9,394.
This new recruitment drive is a direct response to a significant increase in school enrollment, spurred by the state’s free and compulsory education policy launched in January 2025. This policy guarantees access to education up to junior secondary level for all children in Abia, regardless of their origin.
“The idea is to prepare the schools for the next academic session, given the massive enrolment witnessed,” Governor Otti explained, emphasizing the need for quality educators to meet the rising demand.
The announcement follows the successful onboarding of 5,394 teachers, who are currently undergoing orientation in Aba and Umuahia. Governor Otti stated that the application portal for the new recruits will open soon, with the process commencing immediately after the ongoing orientation.
The Labour Party-led administration has made education a cornerstone of its development agenda. Governor Otti, reflecting on his own background, highlighted how public schooling transformed his life. Beyond teacher recruitment, the government is also focused on equipping schools with modern facilities, aiming for standards comparable to developed countries.
In addition to education, Governor Otti touched on progress in security, road infrastructure, and sanitation, urging residents to support his vision for a “New Abia.” The state has also launched the Abia Fostering Innovation Reform School Transformation (AbiaFIRST) program, which includes training for 8,000 teachers to improve service delivery and prepare students for global competitiveness.
The public has largely welcomed the announcement, with social media users commending Governor Otti’s dedication to education reform.
