U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated after a gunman opened fire during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, D.C.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton, where the annual event was being held. According to officials, the suspect fired a shotgun at security personnel, triggering a rapid response from the United States Secret Service.
An agent targeted in the attack was protected by a bulletproof vest and is reported to be in stable condition. Speaking shortly after the incident, President Trump confirmed the officer was “in good shape.”
Authorities said the suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint before being subdued by security operatives. “A man charged a checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California, has been taken into custody and is expected to face federal charges, including assault on a federal officer and use of a firearm during a violent crime. Investigators believe he acted alone.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out shortly after the president and first lady were introduced, with attendees taking cover while security forces secured the venue.
The high-profile dinner, attended by senior government officials, journalists, and business leaders, was immediately cancelled following the incident. It marked Trump’s first appearance at the event since returning to office.
Officials say the Secret Service’s layered security system prevented the attacker from reaching the main ballroom where top dignitaries were gathered.
While investigations into the motive are ongoing, President Trump said there is no immediate indication the attack is linked to broader geopolitical tensions.
The incident is likely to intensify scrutiny of security arrangements at major presidential events in the United States.
