The FGN Power Company (FGNPC), the implementing arm of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), has begun steps to unlock stranded electricity capacity in Ebonyi State through the construction of the Ugwaji–Okposi 330kV double-circuit transmission line.

The development was disclosed during high-level stakeholder engagements with the Ebonyi and Enugu State governments, as part of efforts to accelerate Phase 1 of the PPI aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electricity transmission network and improving power supply reliability.

The FGNPC delegation, led by Chief Commercial Officer Babatunde Daramola-Oniru, met with senior government officials including Secretaries to the State Governments and Commissioners for Energy to align on project execution and remove implementation bottlenecks.

Daramola-Oniru explained that the transmission project is central to improving grid stability and increasing the evacuation of generated power across the network.

According to him, the new 330kV line will help “unlock stranded capacity and strengthen grid reliability,” ultimately improving electricity supply to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure.

He stressed that collaboration with state governments is essential for the success of power projects, noting that early engagement helps secure local ownership, reduce risks, and ensure long-term sustainability.

In Ebonyi State, Prof. Grace Umezurike, the Secretary to the State Government, welcomed the initiative, describing it as critical to powering key public assets such as the state’s international airport, hospitals, and schools.

She assured that the state government would provide full support to ensure timely delivery of the project.

In Enugu State, officials also expressed strong backing, linking the PPI projects to the state’s broader urban renewal and smart city agenda. The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said reliable electricity remains fundamental to industrial growth and digital transformation.

The FGNPC, established as a Special Purpose Vehicle to implement the PPI, is working toward expanding Nigeria’s grid capacity by 4,000MW over the next three years. This will be achieved through coordinated investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure in partnership with global engineering firms and contractors.

The company also emphasised the importance of securing Right-of-Way approvals, addressing environmental concerns, and strengthening security around infrastructure sites to prevent vandalism and project delays.

FGNPC said the Ebonyi transmission project represents a key step in bridging Nigeria’s infrastructure gap and improving electricity access across the country.
