Lagos Unveils Long-Awaited Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge, Opens to Traffic This Week

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to open the Ojota–Opebi Link Bridge to the public this week, marking a significant milestone in efforts to ease traffic congestion across key corridors in the state.

The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Monday by Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to the statement, the bridge is among several landmark projects scheduled for commissioning during the two-day visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Lagos on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Ojota–Opebi Link Bridge is designed to address persistent traffic bottlenecks along the Ojota, Maryland, Mende, Opebi, and Allen corridors—major routes linking residential neighbourhoods to Ikeja’s Central Business District.

Speaking at a press briefing in Alausa, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the bridge establishes a direct and more efficient connection between Ikeja and Ojota, areas that previously relied on longer, indirect routes.

He noted that the project was originally conceived over two decades ago during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State but was revived in January 2022 by the Sanwo-Olu administration.

Beyond the bridge, other projects slated for commissioning include the Lagos State Geographic Information Service (LAGIS) building, the Lagos Multi-Agency Building in Alausa, the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Abijo, Ajah, the Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, and the upgraded Maracana Stadium, which now features 19 mini-football pitches.

To ensure smooth movement during the presidential visit, the state government has put in place comprehensive security, logistics, and traffic management plans. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy over 500 personnel across strategic locations to minimise disruptions for commuters.

The Ojota–Opebi Link Bridge project, flagged off on January 26, 2022, is a key component of the state’s Traffic Management and Transportation pillar under the THEMES Development Agenda and aligns with the Strategic Transport Master Plan.

Governor Sanwo-Olu had previously described the project as critical to decongesting traffic in the Ikeja axis and along Ikorodu Road. By linking Opebi to Mende and Ojota, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease pressure on major routes such as Allen Avenue and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.

Despite earlier missed completion timelines, the project has now been delivered and is set to become a vital transport artery, improving daily commute and connectivity across one of Lagos’ busiest urban corridors.
