Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, has pledged that electricity supply across the country will improve within the next two weeks as the Federal Government moves to resolve gas shortages affecting power generation.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Adelabu acknowledged widespread public frustration over poor electricity supply, attributing the challenge largely to inadequate gas supply to power plants.

The minister said targeted interventions are already underway to improve gas availability, expressing confidence that the measures will begin to yield results soon.

He issued an apology to Nigerians for the hardship caused, particularly during the dry season, noting that homes, businesses, and institutions have been significantly affected.

Adelabu disclosed that a committee has been set up to monitor compliance with domestic gas supply obligations, ensuring that generating companies receive the resources needed to boost output.

He added that improved payment structures are expected to incentivise gas suppliers to sustain supply, reinforcing stability in the sector.

Beyond immediate relief, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2026.

According to him, efforts are ongoing to return to, and surpass, the performance levels recorded in 2025, when there were signs of improvement in power delivery.

Adelabu also highlighted plans to accelerate the Presidential Metering Programme, aimed at ensuring that households and businesses are properly metered.

He stressed the importance of enforcing performance contracts across the power value chain, including gas suppliers, generation companies, and distribution firms, to improve accountability and efficiency.

Addressing speculation about his political future, Adelabu said his immediate priority is delivering results in the power sector.

While acknowledging interest in Oyo State politics, he emphasised that his current focus remains on resolving electricity supply challenges and strengthening the sector for national development.
