Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have killed at least 10 people, including nine soldiers and a Chief Imam, during an attack on Ngoshe town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

Security sources said the terrorists stormed the community late Tuesday shortly after residents broke their Ramadan fast, arriving in large numbers and armed with heavy weapons, including anti-aircraft guns.

The attackers reportedly engaged troops and local security volunteers before overpowering them with superior firepower, killing the soldiers and burning parts of the military base.

“They ransacked the entire Ngoshe community, killed the soldiers and the Chief Imam, and abducted several women and children,” a security source said.

Another local security source confirmed that the insurgents also destroyed a military armoured personnel carrier and other logistics during the assault.

The attack forced hundreds of residents to flee into surrounding bushes, leaving the village largely deserted.

Authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of press time.
