The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria, a move aimed at modernising the country’s national addressing framework and strengthening the digital economy.

The announcement was made by Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, who said the initiative aligns with the priorities outlined in the ministry’s strategic blueprint.

According to the minister, the new system will introduce a geospatially intelligent addressing framework designed to improve location accuracy across the country and enhance the efficiency of mail and parcel delivery services.

“As part of our continued delivery on the targets and priorities set out in the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Strategic Blueprint, I am pleased to announce that the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the implementation of a GIS-enabled Alphanumeric Digital Postcode System for Nigeria,” Tijani said.

He noted that the initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), led by Tola Odeyemi, its Postmaster-General.

According to him, the new system will create a modern addressing structure capable of improving the accuracy of location identification nationwide, while enabling faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing.

“Working in collaboration with NIPOST and its leadership, we will introduce a modern, geospatial intelligent addressing system that improves accuracy across the country and enables faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing,” he added.

Beyond strengthening postal operations, Tijani explained that the digital postcode system would also serve as a critical national infrastructure supporting broader development objectives.

He said the system would support better national planning, enhance emergency response capabilities, and improve the efficiency of logistics, e-commerce operations, and government service delivery.

“As our digital economy continues to grow, foundational systems such as this play an essential role in building the infrastructure required to connect people, businesses and services more efficiently across the country,” the minister said.

The minister added that the approval represents another milestone in the government’s effort to build an enabling environment for a modern, inclusive and globally competitive digital economy.

The new postcode system is expected to leverage geospatial technology to assign unique alphanumeric codes to locations nationwide, making address identification easier and more precise for businesses, government agencies, emergency responders and logistics operators.
