The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread dust haze, cloudy conditions and isolated thunderstorms across several parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday.

The weather outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, warns that persistent dusty atmospheric conditions, particularly across the northern and central regions, could affect health, road safety and aviation operations nationwide.

NiMet disclosed that moderate dust haze is expected to dominate the northern region on Monday and Tuesday, with conditions likely to worsen as the week progresses.

According to the agency, the central region will experience thick to moderate dust haze throughout the forecast period, while inland cities in the southern region are also expected to record moderate dust haze.

Coastal areas, however, are projected to experience sunnier conditions with patches of cloud and isolated thunderstorms in some states.

“Sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected over the coastal region, with chances of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states later in the day,” NiMet said.

Northern region
NiMet forecast moderate dust haze across the northern states on Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday, the agency warned that conditions are expected to deteriorate, with thick dust haze likely to prevail across the region.

Central region
Dusty conditions are expected to persist across the central region throughout the forecast period, with thick to moderate dust haze anticipated daily.

Southern region
Inland cities in the southern region are expected to experience moderate dust haze, while coastal cities will have sunnier skies with cloud patches and occasional thunderstorms.

NiMet cautioned that suspended dust particles in the atmosphere could significantly reduce air quality, increasing the risk of breathing difficulties, especially for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

Children, the elderly and individuals with underlying health challenges were advised to limit outdoor activities and take protective measures where necessary.

The agency also warned that dusty conditions could reduce visibility on roads, urging motorists to drive cautiously and slow down, particularly during rainfall.

For aviation operations, NiMet advised airlines to rely on airport-specific weather reports issued by the agency to ensure safe and efficient flight planning during the period.
