Vehicle owners in Lagos State can now replace faded or unreadable number plates at a reduced cost, following the launch of a three-month rebate scheme by the Lagos State Government (LASG).
The initiative, unveiled through the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), is aimed at improving road safety, strengthening security, and enhancing vehicle identification across the state.
Speaking on the programme, Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola, Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, described the rebate as a proactive and citizen-friendly intervention designed to encourage compliance without resorting to sanctions.
According to him, clear and legible number plates are essential for effective traffic management, crime detection, and public safety. He noted that faded or unclear plates often hamper the work of traffic officials, security agencies, and digital vehicle tracking systems.
The rebate applies strictly to number plates that have become worn or unreadable due to age or environmental exposure. Eligible vehicle owners can access the service at the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi, which serves as the pilot centre, or at any accredited MVAA office across Lagos State.
During the rebate period, motorists will pay a reduced fee for plate replacement, making it easier and more affordable to comply with regulations.
Mr. Muri-Okunola said the scheme reflects the state government’s approach of balancing enforcement with empathy, stressing that the focus is on voluntary compliance rather than punishment. He added that standardised and visible number plates are critical to efficient traffic control, law enforcement operations, and emergency response.
He also cautioned motorists against using unauthorised agents, emphasising that all number plate replacements must be carried out only at government-approved centres to guarantee authenticity and quality.
Beyond improving the appearance of vehicles, the LASG noted that legible number plates help reduce traffic violations, support investigations, and enhance the effectiveness of security and digital monitoring systems.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to policies that promote safety, convenience, and accountability, saying the rebate scheme is part of ongoing efforts to create a safer, more organised transport environment for residents.
